GTO Wizard vs an RTA: what the study tool and the live tool each do
Players who have paid for GTO Wizard sometimes ask whether an RTA replaces it, and players who use an RTA ask whether they still need to study. The answer to both is no, because the two tools do different jobs on different days. This is a clear-eyed comparison from a team that builds the live tool and recommends the study tool.
1. What GTO Wizard is
A library of precomputed solver solutions you browse: pick a format, a preflop spot, a flop, and read the equilibrium strategy for every hand at every node, with ranges, EVs and frequencies. On top of it sits a trainer that deals you spots and scores your decisions against the solution, plus tools to aggregate strategies across many flops. It is the best way yet devised to learn what the equilibrium does and why, away from the table, at your own pace, with no clock running.
2. What an RTA is
A tool that brings the solution to a live decision: it reads the table, works out the spot, and shows the equilibrium line (and, in GTO MAX AI's case, an exploit line and the reason) in the seconds before you act. It is for the moment of decision, not for understanding; it does not aggregate, it does not let you browse, and it is only as useful as its reader is accurate.
3. Where they overlap and where they differ
| GTO Wizard | An RTA (GTO MAX AI) | |
|---|---|---|
| When | Away from the table | During the hand |
| Input | You pick the spot | The reader finds the spot from the screen |
| Solutions | Vast precomputed library, many formats and trees | Charts preflop, a flop library, turns and rivers solved live with the real ranges |
| Opponent | None: pure equilibrium (nodelocking lets you model one by hand) | Profiled per player from observed hands; exploit line sized by sample |
| Explanation | Deep: ranges, EVs, aggregated reports | Short: the reason for this line, in words, now |
| Where allowed | Everywhere; it is study | Study, home games, clubs that permit it, play money; forbidden on most real-money sites |
| Learning effect | Builds understanding | Builds habits, if you predict before you look |
4. The solutions are not the same solutions
A study library is computed once, for standard ranges and trees, and is excellent for learning the shape of strategy. A live solve uses the ranges of the hand as it was actually played, which on the turn and river can differ a lot from the standard: a player who limped and called has a range the library never modelled. Neither is "more correct"; the library is more general and the live solve is more specific. A player who studies the general shape and sees the specific answer at the table gets both.
5. How to use both
- Study with Wizard, by spot type. Learn why the equilibrium bets small on dry flops, checks back medium hands, overbets with nut advantage. These are patterns; libraries teach patterns.
- Play with the RTA, predicting first. Decide, then look. Each disagreement goes on a list.
- Take the list back to Wizard. The spots where you were wrong at the table are the spots to study next. This loop is the whole method.
- Use the RTA's exploit line as a lesson in deviation. Wizard shows the equilibrium; the exploit line shows how far a particular opponent lets you leave it, and why. That is the part no library teaches.
- Keep the rules straight. Wizard is allowed everywhere. An RTA is allowed where real-time assistance is: study, home games, clubs that permit it, play money.
