Multiway pots: why no solver covers them, and what to do instead
Ask any RTA vendor what their tool does in a three-way pot and listen for the pause. Solvers are two-player machines. With a third player the tree explodes, the equilibrium concept itself gets shaky, and what every tool shows you is an approximation. This post explains why, what reliable rules survive, and how GTO MAX AI handles the gap rather than hiding it.
1. Why two players
A solver computes a Nash equilibrium: strategies where no player gains by deviating alone. In two-player zero-sum games that equilibrium is unique in value and guarantees a result against any opponent. With three or more players neither property holds. There can be many equilibria with different values, two players can implicitly cooperate against the third, and a strategy that is "equilibrium" offers no guarantee against opponents who play a different one. On top of the theory, the tree is a different size: each extra player multiplies the action sequences at every node, so a flop that takes minutes heads-up takes hours or days three-handed, and the live turn and river solves that an RTA depends on are out of reach entirely.
Some study tools offer multiway solutions for specific preflop spots. Nothing solves multiway postflop in the time a decision takes. Any RTA that shows you frequencies in a three-way pot is showing something other than a solve, and should say so.
2. What survives: the rules that are actually true multiway
- Equity is shared. Heads-up, 55% equity is a favourite. Three-way, 40% can be the best hand at the table and still a dog to the field. Everything is relative to how many hands you must beat.
- Bluff less. A bluff needs everyone to fold. Against two players who each fold 60%, the bluff works 36% of the time. Break-even on a pot-size bet is 50%. Most multiway bluffs are losing bets before the cards come out.
- Bet smaller, with a tighter range. The bettor's range has to be stronger because it must beat more hands, and smaller sizes keep the price of being wrong down while still charging draws that now have more players paying them off.
- Check more, especially out of position. With more players behind, the chance someone has it rises, and the value of seeing what they do before committing chips rises with it.
- Draws go up in value, medium made hands go down. A flush draw against two callers gets paid by a bigger pot; top pair weak kicker against two callers is a bluff-catcher at best.
- Position matters more. Acting last against two players is worth more than acting last against one, because two players' actions are information.
3. How GTO MAX AI handles it
In a multiway pot the solver is not consulted. A rules engine takes over: it computes your equity against each remaining player's actual range (from the preflop action and how they have played the hand), checks range advantage, board texture, your position and the stack-to-pot ratio, and picks a line with the multiway adjustments above built in, more checking, smaller bets, fewer bluffs. It is grounded in the same inputs a solver uses, but it is an approximation, and the panel says so: the line is labelled rules-based, not solver. Expect it to be right on the clear decisions (value bet, fold, check back) and less precise on the thin ones.
The exploit layer still applies. If the player who bet into two opponents is one who only bets the nuts multiway, the profile knows that, and the fold the rules engine suggests becomes a confident fold rather than a reluctant one.
4. What to actually do at the table
Treat multiway pots as a different game with its own small set of rules. Tighten your continuing range, size down when you bet, bluff only with equity, respect aggression from players who have shown they need it, and remember that a pot with three players in it is a pot where someone usually has a hand. The solver's precision is not available here, and a player who knows that is already ahead of one who thinks it is.
Where the solver does apply, and how fast: how a live solve works.
